Enero de 1945. Es el último invierno de la II Guerra Mundial y en la Holanda ocupada la nieve lo cubre todo y la comida escasea. Michiel, un chico de trece años, vive en un pueblo cerca de Zwolle y está deseando colaborar con la Resistencia que crece de forma clandestina en respuesta al odio que profesa por los Nazis e ignorando el hecho de que su padre se oponga a ello. La oportunidad de Michiel llega cuando su vecino Dirk le pide que entregue un sobre en el nombre de la Resistencia Sin embargo, Dirk es capturado poco después y Michiel ve con sus propios ojos cómo los soldados alemanes disparan al supuesto destinatario de la carta. Michiel encontrará así un mapa de un bosque cercano dentro del sobre que le llevará a una cueva secreta donde yace herido Jack, un piloto inglés que está escondido por miedo a morir.
Nominada al oscar 2010 en la categoría de película de habla no inglesa.
