Una nueva comedia de acción en vivo-aventura basado vagamente en el "aprendiz de brujo" segmento de Fantasía de Disney. En días modernos Manhattan, el maestro hechicero Balthazar Blake (Nicholas Cage) intenta proteger la ciudad de su archienemigo, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina), un malvado mago con los planes nefastos. Horvath está decidido a reclamar ciudad de Nueva York por sus propios propósitos malvados, y contrata a un ilusionista (Tony Kebbell) para ayudarle con ese fin. Teniendo en cuenta las fuerzas de trabajo formidable en su contra, Blake no se siente que él puede cumplir con esta misión solo. Para ayudarle en su empresa, busca a un hombre aparentemente promedio, Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), que ha sido contratada para ser aprendiz de Blake. Stutler es escéptico y reacio a involucrarse, pero finalmente es convencido por Blake para ayudar en esta causa. Blake da Stutler un curso acelerado en la magia, y desgracias siempre acarrear.
