Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) es un adolescente que se las ingenia solo para sobrevivir. Cuando Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) lo encuentra caminando por la calle, él en realidad no tiene un lugar para vivir. En pleno invierno va por la calle en shorts y una camiseta. Al encontrarse, él le dice a Leigh Anne que es uno de los compañeros de clase de su hija, entonces, sin dudarlo, ella insiste en que vaya a su casa a resguardarse del frío y que se quede a dormir. Lo que comienza como un gesto de bondad termina siendo algo mucho más importante para Michael, pues llega convertirse en miembro de la familia Tuohy, sin importar las diferencias existentes ni su cuna.
