Sinopsis

La historia trata sobre una chica del Japón actual, Kagome Higurashi, que cae dentro de un pozo mágico y es transportada atrás en el tiempo al Japón Feudal (Sengoku), donde lo mágico es común y existen monstruos y demonios. Kagome resulta ser la reencarnación de una joven sacerdotisa muy poderosa llamada Kikyo que selló al peligroso hanyou (Medio-Demonio) InuYasha a un árbol mediante una flecha sagrada. Kagome pierde a manos de un monstruo la Shikon no Tama (Joya de los 4 Espíritus), que se encontraba dentro de su cuerpo y que tiene el poder de incrementar los poderes de hombres y monstruos. Para salvar su vida libera a InuYasha, quien derrota al demonio Cienpiés que la había robado. Pero InuYasha desea la joya, y Kagome salva su vida y recupera la perla gracias a que Kaede, la hermana de Kikyo, colocó un collar mágico a InuYasha para dominarlo.
Poco después de encontrar la Shikon no Tama, la vuelven a perder, y Kagome la rompe en mil pedazos cuando intenta recuperarla. Los fragmentos se dispersan, y la serie cuenta las peripecias de Kagome e InuYasha para encontrar los fragmentos de la joya, y también deben de empezar una carrera para recupera los fragmentos pues el poderoso demonio Naraku también esta tras ellos. A medida que los buscan, se encuentran con gente que les acompañará en su misión para vengarse de los infortunios que Naraku les ha hecho pasar, como Shippo, Sango y Miroku, también encuentran enemigos como el hermano de InuYasha, Sesshomaru y las creaciones de Naraku. A lo largo de la historia, Kagome e InuYasha empiezan a tener sentimientos profundos entre ellos. Sin embargo, el romance queda como algo secundario durante la mayor parte de la historia, más centrada en la acción.
