Nina (Natalie Portman) es una bailarina de Nueva York obsesionada con su profesión. Vive junto a su madre, Erica (Barbara Hershey), una ex bailarina que la somete a una rígida disciplina y que controla cada uno de sus movimientos, como si fuera su sombra. Las obsesiones de ambas llegan al límite cuando el director artístico de la compañía (Vincent Cassel) decide sustituir a su principal estrella, Beth (Winona Ryder), para representar 'El lago de los cisnes'. En principio Nina es la mejor colocada para hacerse con el papel, pero de repente surge una competidora letal, Lilly (Mila Kunis). Las dos jóvenes lucharán a muerte por llevarse la gloria.
