Marcus Cotton (Patrick Fabian), un predicador harto ya de vivir a costa de las creencias de personas desesperadas, decide poner punto y final a su carrera con un documental que desvele todos los entresijos y engaños que hay detrás del “negocio del exorcismo”. Para la ocasión, acude a una granja de la Luisiana rural. Louis Sweetzer, un ferviente fundamentalista, se ha puesto en contacto con él convencido de que su hija adolescente, Nell, está poseída por un demonio que es necesario exorcizar antes de que su terrible experiencia acabe convirtiéndose en una tragedia inimaginable. La situación de Nell va a poner a prueba la entereza de Cotton. ¿Existe realmente la encarnación del mal o es simplemente una pobre chica aterrorizada por las circunstancias que la rodean? Ahora ya es demasiado tarde para echarse atrás: el reverendo Cotton y su equipo tendrán que encontrar una forma de salvar a Nell y a sí mismos antes de que sea demasiado tarde.
